All in the Attitude

Hayden can’t wait for it to really snow, so he can go ‘boarding.’ Last year, Jace also learned to love the sport, and as a 6 year old, he was pretty good! This year Jace has been given quite a few restrictions: no trampoline, no bike, no four-wheeler, and of course—no snowboarding. So, as Hayden started pulling out his snowboarding “stuff” tonight, Jace found his snowboard, boots, and helmet. We had a gentle talk about the fact that he won’t be visiting any ski hills this year, and he said, “I know.” I was expecting a fight, but he didn’t give me one. His mature understanding of his current situation amazes me, and I find myself admiring him now as he straps his boots into his board, and scoots around the house anyway.
This week has been awesome. Jace awakes every day with a sick stomach, but he is distracted quite easily as he is always looking for something to do. Tomorrow he will receive PEG shots into his legs, but that is all. He is still taking his oral chemo meds daily, and after this week’s treatment, we will be starting Cycle #3! Can you all believe we have two months behind us? We aren't sure what this 3rd month of treatment will bring, but we have been informed that every other month will be difficult:  the 1st, 3rd, and 5th months of treatment being the hardest on Jace. Luckily Christmas and New Years will be in the middle of the 4th month.

Jace just said to me, “Mom, we really should give my snowboarding boots to Dayton (his cousin), so they won’t be wasted this year.” It really is all in the attitude isn’t it?

This is especially for Hayden. I watched you today at confrence with your mom. I know how much she depends on you. I just wanted to let you know that even though I don't know you well, I admire you so much. You are a great example to me. you remind me of another "Big Brother" we all share. Thank you for being such a great example!

It is definitely "all in the attitude"!! It amazes me how many times life seems to be at its worst in our lives or in the lives of those we care so much about and yet there is that glimmer of hope or an instant when what we are going through just doesn't seem to be as bad as the next person. And though it is usually hindsight, that what we go through and how our attitude was during that time turned out to bless our lives or the lives of others around us. Thank you Jace for helping me to remember that attitude is SO IMPORTANT and that there is always someone who needs us even if it's just a pair of boots.
Love you guys, Erin

Man, I almost made it through a post without crying. I was fine until the end when Jace said that about his snowboarding boots and then it was over. My first thought was 'NO WAY! Those are yours and you'll be back in them in no time.' Then I realized what a sweet act you were trying to do and decided I'd back off and let you, your mom and Dayt work it out. I love you so much and can't wait til you and I are both on the hill together!

P.S. I'm still thinking it could be fun to go watch everyone else while drinking some warm hot chocolate. Sitting in the lodge or the truck, either would be great by me!

Jace... I can't tell you how much it means to me that you and Hayden spent some great time with Vai... He came running in the house saying.... "Mom, guess who I just got to see? Jace... mom i saw Jace and Hayden they are the coolest, they played with us and it was so fun! Can we go again and see them next week?" Jace and Hayden you two made his whole week. Thank you for being great to him and giving him some of your time and energy. Vai thinks the world of you and somehow knows that you are tougher than most kids your age. I asked Vai if you were his hero and he responded with...Yes! I proceeded to ask him... if jace was any super hero which one would you think he would be? Vai looked at me with the most confused look on his face and said, "Mom, he already is Ironman Jace" that is a super hero. Thanks for having such a great positive attitude, it's fun to hear the amazing things that you have to say!!! Have a great day!!
Love you, Staci

*Amy and Matt thank you for sharing your boys with us!!! Love you two!!!

I was just complaining to my mom about trivial matters and she asked me if I had read this post on Jace's positive attitude and that I need to be more like that:) Thanks for the great example and the much needed reminders about what really is important in life.
