The boys played amazing all weekend in the Rigby tourney. They actually even made it to the 10U championship game Saturday, but after four innings we were getting slaughtered. As parents we were shaking our heads, and checking the time...hoping to still have enough daylight to mow our lawns when we returned home. I even started packing up for the day...taking the empty Gatorade bottles to the garbage can, etc. Then something caught my eye. As I walked by the dug out, Jace was up on the fence. He was chanting to our own batter. At this point, I seriously think the score was 6-17 (them) or something...
But Jace was not giving up. In his best baseball jargon he was standing, cheering, and chattering these phrases to his batting teammate: "We got this. Come on now. We got this. Just a hit. Just a hit. Come on now. We got this!"
We had two out. One more out, and the game was over...but Jace was cheering his heart out. It struck me as a beautiful sight and brought a genuine smile to my face. After a long day in the hot sun, Jace was still fighting. Life lessons come in many forms. As he cheered "We Got This!" I liked the way it sounded. It reminded me there are many ways to win-- and maybe once in a while there is an appropriate way to use the word "got."
Jace had chemo again this morning. He missed practice for his treatment (which REALLY annoyed him), but he feels the timing is going to work just perfectly. He has games this weekend and next, so he plans to "hold off" his sickness and save it for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. He "knows" he'll be better for next week's tournament.:)
This is a shot of when Jace didn't know I was taking a pic... I wonder if he's thinking to himself...
HOW many more times do I have to visit the Princess room??:)
Then, when he realized I was aiming the camera at him...
he posed a bit.:) Here, I'm pretty sure he's thinking...
WE 'GOT' THIS!

Oh how I love this blog and the people it's about! Your last post was the topic at my dad's birthday dinner the other night. We love the mitt story! This post warms my heart as well. Jace--you are a stud, even with the princess background! You totally "got" this! And if it makes you feel better, they put only the coolest patients in the princess room--right Mark?!;)
ReplyDeleteAre we down to fingers now....Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov....I told your mom we needed to have a celebration when chemo is finishes....but you know everyday is a celebration....of life..Love you guys

ReplyDeleteAmyleigh,
ReplyDeleteIt has been I while since I checked your blog...it is good to see that your family is winning this battle with cheerful attitudes. I hope and pray your sons battle will be completely over soon. May God bless you as you and your family bless the lives of so many by inspiring us all through this blog. ROCK ON!
Thank you Leatham family for inspiring and strengthening us. As I write this Chad is receiving his first dose of Methotrexate. We have been very anxious about the whole process and possible side effects but when you came to the hospital and told us how Jace had flown through this treatment with flying colors it really helped to calm our nerves. The bag of goodies and binder are perfect and Jace, we brought your letters and picture with us to Huntsman to remind us first of all, what a stud you are and second, that we "got" this!
ReplyDeletep.s. any chance we can make you a Seahawks fan?? :) If not we still want to hook you up with some gear when we get home! Keep fighting!
