Fear

Here we are again- watching his chest go up and down. His chemo treatment may start showing some effects, and if you were here, you would see the fear in our eyes. We look over him at each other with that "parent" look and just shake our heads. It's still surreal.

Your messages and comments on the blog are keeping us going. Last night Jace's blood pressure was too high after taking a shower, so he crawled back into bed and we cracked the computer. "Read some more," he says. "Find the one about... remember when so-and-so said this?...they think I'm tough?" You know how you never listen to the ones who are closest to the situation? Like if your mom tells you how amazing you played in a game, you don't believe her because she *had* to say it? Well, everything you tell Jace is reinforcing his strength.

My fears this morning are thick and ugly. Yesterday a nurse had to "gown up" to put chemicals into my little boy's body. We were instructed that if he throws up or pees on us, it's considered hazardous material. We have to wear gloves to hold his bedpan... It is TOO much. I'm not sure why it has to be Jace, but I am starting to understand there is a reason for his spunky personality. He's going to need it.

Thank you to EVERYONE taking care of Hayden. When we met with the social worker yesterday, she asked if we had a burning question to discuss. We tearfully explained that we hated being separated from our other little man-- but as we started telling her about our social network of love, she helped us know he is just where he belongs. Those of you surrounding Hayden with love are my heroes this morning. Last night we heard reports of those of you "keeping an eye on him" and we cried thankful tears. Hayden is such a tender, sweet boy, and we know he will try to protect us from the reality of any pain he feels, so we appreciate those of you calling him and communicating with him. Even though he will say he's ok, we know he is hurting so much.
My favorite word in the English language is hope. This morning I'm going to focus on that word with all of the energy I have. Thank YOU for lifting us and loving us and making it possible to hope for the best.

  1. Good Morning Kids! That was nice to get up and read a new post this morning. We worried about you through the night and wondered if you got sick. Your Mom got it right-on Jace, when she said you are spunky! I never knew a kid who could catch 7 frogs in one day--and still want to go back for more. Or trap kitties in a bag and hang on tight until we got them 'delivered'--like you can. That was WILD that day wasn't it!You have what it takes to get through this. So do your Mom and Dad! Sometimes before the trial, as we anticipate it, we think we can't---but SURPRISE! You are all doing AMAZING and keeping us strong beside you. Hang in there little man, we love you and are cheering for you. Gram n Gramp G

  3. Jace you are a tough little man. You have such a sweet spirit. Even though you are sick, you are concerned and care so much about others. Hayd is praying for you too. He misses teasing his little brother. (Dont worry Ky is getting it all.) You have so many prayers in your behalf daily. Keep having Faith like all of us. We love you little man. Come home soon. 5. Jace you are a tough little man and I'm glad your mom has made this blog so you can be reminded of that every day. YOU CAN DO THIS! There are many many thoughts and prayers offered on your behalf. Only really special guys get that and you are special because you are so strong. Always have positive thoughts and keep your "spunky" personality going! Love to you all, Leon, Marilyn, Parker, Logan, Alan and Zach.

  6. I know you are going through a difficult time right now and we are all blessed with different trials in our lives, i want to tell you of an experence i had when i was going through a hard time in my life my dad gave me a fathers blessing, in that he said something that stood out to me that i will never forget which was, "do not fear, for if you have fear you cannot have faith." fear is the opposite of faith. So dont fear keep up the faith and we are continually thinking and praying for you guys. I just think Jace is the cutest thing. I love that picture of him in his football shirt. What a stud. Love you guys.

  7. Good Morning Jace, Braedon is so jealous. He said "He plays football, and gets a real cats jersey" I told him I think you play flag football like he does, but he was still thinking you were pretty lucky to have that nice jersey. He also said you look like you have gotten taller since he saw you last. He was sad to hear you were sick and said he would say a prayer for you. Hope you have a good day. Give your mom a big hug for me!!

  8. Dear Jace and Matt and Amy,

I have been blessed by your faith and courage through this most difficult time. I was especially touched by the power the primary songs have had during this time. The Savior is near. Many in the ward are praying for you and your family. The primary on Sunday talked about your situation and are praying for you. They prepared a special gift that someone will bring to you. Our Heavenly Father has heard many many prayers about one Jace Leatham. Sister Leatham I was impressed with your comments about hope..I thought of the following talk from President Uchtdorf.

    http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?hideNav=1&locale=0&sourceId=25c5a0ad4843d110VgnVCM100000176f620a____&vgnextoid=f318118dd536c010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD

I hope the link works. I pray the Spirt of Lord will to be with you and your family. Jace you have always seemed older than you are--you remind me of a junior member of the Army of Helaman--A Little Warrior who is committed to being an example and follower of Christ. Thank you for being willing to share your strength with us. In so many cases children our our examples in life. (For such is the Kingdom of God)

  9. Hey Jace! Just want you to know we're all thinking about ya! Davis says "hi" and so does Devan. I think we're going to have Hayden stay over at our house on Wednesday night after Devan and Kyler's game. We're all praying that you'll get better soon! You need to hurry up and get all better so we can play some travel ball. We're gonna need your speed on the bases! Flag football was miserable last night because it rained and blew really hard! It wasn't fun and some of the kids were crying! Big babies! I know you would've traded places with them in a second. You're a tough little guy, just like everyone says. I know you're tougher than I am! The Flag jerseys are really cool and we'll be getting yours to you soon. Hang in there and work hard to get better! We love you and are praying for you always. Don't worry about Hayden, we'll take good care of him! Love, Coach Berry

  10. Jace,
Well yesterday at school we had Pizza!! I know that would not make you sick :) Mrs. Crowder came up to me and asked if I knew why you were gone. I told her I did and that you were in my ward. I like her, how about you? Skye was standing by the kitchen door there waiting for a friend and I asked how she was doing...she said good...but I can't wait for Jace to come home :) There are alot of us at Hibbard Elementary missing your smile. I love checking the blog because right there at the top is you with that great big smile, I love it. Well kiddo, keep being tough.

  14. I like the word hope too! When we have done all we can, the only thing left to do is hope! I know Heavenly Father is keeping his eye on you guys! I don't know why this trial was given to you, maybe because he knew you could handle it. But I do know that myself and many others are learning from your situation! I recommit myself every time I read your blog to be a better mom, wife, friend, sister, and daughter. I know there are others who are doing the same. I liked Britt's advice! Do not fear, have faith! I think all of us can follow the same! Thanks for being such a beacon of light! I am uplifted every time I read yours and the many other comments that are posted!

  22. Jace: I haven't even met you but I keep checking back to read your blog because I can't believe how strong you are. Heavenly Father must know how strong you are! I also love to see your picture at the top of the blog, you must be one tough football player with a cute smile. I remember your big brother Hayden when he used to go to the same babysitter that my kids did. My son Jayce used to play with Hayden and I remember how excited Hayden was when he was going to have a little brother named Jace. Your mom said that her favorite word was hope, well you know what I hope that I get to meet you soon and I hope that you have a better day and so does your mom, dad, and Hayden. We'll keep praying for you to get better! So why do they call you iron man Jace, is it because you are so tough?

  23. I know that we don't know your family really well. But when I heard about your little man I could feel my heart sink for you. As I thought about my little guys so many thoughts when threw my head. Being a parent is never easy. I can't say that I know that your going threw but I know that being strong is sometimes hard but your family and friends are so amazing when you need them they are there and when you need someone to cry with you are sure to find someone to lean on. I know that things will work out the way that are Heavenly Father wants. And from what I have heard your family is truly amazing and even though this seems hard right now one day it will all be a memory and you will look at Jace and think that he can and will do anything. I hope that you are getting some rest and I am so sure that your super hero will continue to be strong:)

  24. Amy and Matt,
Words cannot express how touched and inspired I am by you two. Its hard to believe my heart can hurt so much for someone I have never met. How you are dealing with this is amazing to me. I have been parenting alone for a very long time and I just hope you realize how blessed you are to have each other. That little boy must be a pheonominal individual. But amazing people raise amazing children. You and your family are in my thoughts.

  25. Wow, what a week for the Leatham family! Jace you must be quite the stud to be dealt a trial like this. It's easy to say on this end, and maybe hard to hear there, but rest assured that we have a loving Heavenly Father who is aware of you Jace. Amy and Matt and everyone else who might be close to Jace can know that Heavenly Father is aware of you too. I can't imagine what you all must be feeling, but in any trial let us remember our Savior. I can't begin to understand how the atonement works, but it does. In that sacred garden and then again on the cross, our Savior took upon himself all of our sins, but even more that that he took upon himself all of our sorrows, infirmities, and afflictions. Because of His immense love for us, He chose to experience every dreadful feeling imaginable so that He could better support us and in our times of need. How amazing - Jesus knows you Jace. He knows your name, and he knows how bad you feel, and he knows how scared you are because he has experienced it too. He knows exactly how your parents feel, and He knows how to support them. One of my favorite stories from the Book of Mormon is found in Mosiah when Alma and his followers are in bondage to the Lamanites and wicked Amulon (former priest of King Noah). Immense burdens are placed upon Alma's people, and they cannot pray openly for fear of being killed. They raise their voices to God in silence, and receive an answer. They will be delivered eventually, but for the moment while their burdens seem too immense to bear the Lord offers this "And I will also ease the aburdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage." The burden was not instantly removed, but the Lord did grant His people the strength to go on. The description that comes next amazes me, "And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord." (Mosiah 24:14-15) Submit cheerfully and with patience? Wow, that is a tough one, but know that He is intimately aware of you and your struggles. Jace, keep battling - you must be an ironman, or you wouldn't have been dealt a sickness like this. You can inspire and bless thousands and perhaps many more by continuing to fight the good fight. Jace, Amy, Matt - you are in my prayers and in my families prayers. Keep fighting. Just one hour, maybe even just one minute at a time, but keep fighting and I pray (along with many others)that you will be granted the strength and courage to face this and emerge victorious.

  30. I Clown at a Children's Hospital in Washington State. My favorite area is the Oncology department. I have the opportunity to interact with so many Children battling treatment and the families present supporting their little ones.

In hope to give you more HOPE, most of these little ones WIN the battle with Lukemia! Their has been so much research and success with this that your biggest challenge is to keep Jace in a germ free environment, meaning keeping everyone away from him that has any indication of any kind of illness, cold etc. especially when his counts are low. People just don't realize how important that is for a positive outcome.

May your family be blessed with strength during this difficult time.

  32. Hello Matt, Amy, Hayden, Jace and Family...
This is Niki from HK, I have been working with Matt for a couple of years now and just wanted to let you know how many people at HK are thinking of you right now.
Matt...I wanted you to know that we are planning a lunch here at HK next week to raise some money to help with some of the expenses that will inevitably come to your family. Everyone here wants to help and we decided that this was the best way to pool our resources and come together to do what we can. Matt, I can just see you now, probably shaking your head saying "They don't need to do that, they shouldn't do that." (Amy, you know I'm right here!) But guys, people want to do something. We want to help.
Matt, remember when I was doing that fundraiser for my friend with cancer, and you kept saying, "Wow, you're a good friend to do all that." Well, it's the same for you....you have a lot of friends here and everyone wants to do something so here we go!
The event is planned for Wednesday the 23rd, and anyone reading this blog is welcome to come! We'd love to see some of Jace's friends and family, and we'll feed you a burger! It will be held at the HK Offices on S. Yellowstone. Call me at 523-6600 for info!
Again, Matt and Amy, Jace and Hayden...stay strong! -Your HK Family

  35. My prayers go out to Jace and his entire family.

Amy (always Mrs. Leatham to me): Even now you continue to teach your alumni students about what truly matters in life - your family. I can still remember you bringing your sons to school (was Jace the son that was born while I worked with you in student government at the Jr. High?) and introducing them with great pride and a big smile on your face.

I could always tell you loved teaching - but even more - I could always (and can still) tell how much you love your family.

God bless you all. Thank you for sharing your story, and blessing us all through your trial.

  38. Jace, we miss you here at Hibbard Elementary. I know a little about being in the hospital because I had three operations in five weeks. I know how the medicine makes food taste funny and how it is difficult at times to sleep with so many tubes and wires stuck to you. I also know that Heavenly Father helps you get used to those wires and the funny tasting foods. He will help you, that is his job, and he is very good at doing his job.

I know this is hard, but you are one of the toughest kids I know. You never got into trouble and were never brought to my office for being mean. We need you back as soon as you can because you made our school better just by being who you are. The younger kids look up to you and want to be just like you. So hurry back, we are saving a place for you. We pray for you all the time and know you will be blessed.

Get better, we need you back.

I can't imagine even a little bit what you are feeling at this time. Jace is so lucky to have such great parents that can be right at his side. Our thoughts are with you and your family. To Jace: you are one tough little guy. It's a good thing your dad has taught you to play football so that you could learn to be so tough! The hospital can be a scary place, but everyone there loves you and wants you to get better soon! You are lucky to have such a great mom and dad there with you. Keep smiling and remember that your Heavenly Father knows how you feel and knows what you need to feel better. He loves you so much.

We now add our prayers to all the many others headed your way every second of every day. Jace your mom has done an amazing job on letting everyone know whats going on every day. And put some really cute pictures of you on the blog. You look just like your dad. You look like a tough lil' man. Iron man fits you well.
